Rock Island Armory’s TAC ULTRA 10mm 1911 (Pistol Review)

- Monday, July 27, 2015

RIA TAC ULTRA 1911 10mm-1

Chambering 1911 10mm and can do. Classic platform designed for .45 ACP, captured about 21,000 psi with 230 rounds of ammunition slug. In the late 1920s, the weapon was satisfied with the .38 Super, which has about 36,000 psi, depending on the load. Enter 1911 to 10mm and you talked about the maximum pressure in the range of 37,500 psi. That is the design of an old Pistol rocking, but not with the Rock Island Armory TAC Ultra.

Call me a little biased, but with each new 1911 I manipulate, one of the first tests I realized what I call the "test toys." I shook the gun and listen to all the loose parts. TAC Ultra is silence. When I look for any play between the blades and chassis, nothing but a tight fit. TAC Ultra produced in the city of Marikina in the Philippines by Armscor. The 1911s to enter the GI Armscor Pistol 1911 Affordable style. The TAC Series line raises the bar. The TAC Ultra particular, is equipped with all the features that we had to wait in a queue for an extended beaver, 1911, an ambidextrous thumb safety, and better distribute the magazine, to name a few.

RIA TAC ULTRA 1911 10mm-2

TAC Ultra uses a system of 70 series, so there is no internal security of the striker as in the series in 1911 80. Some purists, myself included, prefer the series 70. The trigger feels cleaner and sharper than systems that use triggers to control safety devices such as in the series and a slide 80. Slide stops forged.

TAC Ultra using cannon design one piece guide rod and distribute bull with a traditional barrel sleeve. This configuration increases the accuracy of the gun, and also makes for field stripping procedure is slightly different. When the gun in battery, flare bull barrel lock up the muzzle, with a tight fit in the slide, and rear locking tab is locked in as a typical knife in 1911, made a tight Pistol bank vaults. The barrel is made of stainless steel and have an integrated power strip as Clark private barrel. Path integral fully support the case of direct eat up the tower on a hill; there is no gap between the frame and barrel bullet nose to survive.

Slide sport subtle logo on the back of the rear inclined grooves Armscor; No serration tilt at the mouth end of the slider, too. The top of the slide round like IM-style weapons. Handlebar that fits in place, and has a fiber optic tube that sucks small reddish orange light available. In dim to dark conditions, the handlebar is more difficult to see, but it is the nature of optical fiber handlebar. Adjustable rear sights are dovetailed into the slide and radical dehorning. In fact, there is no hint of sharp edges in the rear view, which has two white dots and a square notch. View of the back is in contact with the back of the blade for maximum viewing distance. A small flat-blade screwdriver and a sense of direction that is necessary to customize the site. No arrows to show the direction of view adjustment, but there are indicators that show signs of coming left / right movement of the view. Click accurate and have confidence in the adjustment. In use, the site is very good. They do not lose their zero, even with constant load pounding 10mm.

RIA TAC ULTRA 1911 10mm-3

"When I go to the target, I was stunned. The TAC Ultra grouped values bullet magazine in an impressive group."

The frame has a full cover that allows the attachment of a laser or light through Picatinny style rail. Railed part of the receptor to be improved, and the extra weight helps tame recoil of some 10mm. Serrations and boxes semi frontstrap polymer housing assistance for grip and control of these animals. The upswept beaver allows a higher grip on the gun without fear hammer bite. Retarder is also sized so that even with some less than perfect grip security will be released. Palu framework offers a lot of grip to arm and disarm the hammer and so far, ambidextrous thumb safety work exclusively with either a positive click when changing your thumb. The trigger also frame and long vertical lines so that your finger is placed on the trigger. It is adapted to be controlled by a small hex screw in the face of the trigger. The trigger was a little bit of pick up and before creep rupture. The trigger is good. She burst on average 4.8 pounds.

Operator II adhesion panel has an aggressive pattern of a golf ball near the outer edge they finally close frontstrap diagonal cuts in retreat. A thumb rest allows quick and easy access to the release of the magazine for a refill of high speed magazine. At first glance, I thought the deal was too aggressive to 10mm, but they do not. Even after the shooting extended, palms no worse for wear. TAC funnel Ultra also sports magazine clip to stick frames and held by screws of the handle panel. Funnel which requires basepads to be installed in the magazine so that you can slam home with the palm of your hand until I accelerated refill.

Two eight-round magazine that came with a gun; Both have a metal body and followers. I do not bust my thumb load these magazines, and both magazines came with basepads mounted on rubber. When sitting, about 0.13 inches
basepad extend below the mag. I like to fit almost flush installation. Done parkerized entire Pistol executed properly and underrated.

TAC ULTRA 10mm Time span

RIA TAC ULTRA 1911 10mm-4

Three brands of ammunition used for the work ranges: two counts of driving and the cost of defense. Training costs consist of grains federal American Eagle WFSJ 180 and PMC-200 grain FMJ Bronze-TC. I also use personal defense round of federal loaded 180 Hydra-Shok JHPs grains. All ammunition perfect ride through TAC Ultra. To test the precision I placed a target 25-yard and used my beach bag as a break. TAC Ultra favored charging American Eagle on the PMC, hands down. Always test a variety of ammunition in your weapon; You never know what brand or weight ball, he will perform with, so do your due diligence. I know I am preaching to the choir.

When I pull the cartridge federal, I had to lift his head and look at the target. The shot felt good, but I can not see where they hit. When I go to the target, I was stunned. TAC Ultra grouped value bullet magazine in an impressive group. Six of the eight holes that touch; five creates a big hole. "What is this weapon?" I wondered. TAC Ultra retreat with very restrained. I think the cover extended protection has helped reduce muzzle shake and made me the target. In rapid fire, Pistol pedaling fast, as you would expect a hot lap as 10mm. I needed hiking boots to get an empty box removed from the gun.

RIA TAC ULTRA 1911 10mm-5

I'm not sure what the long term effects will be in the firing of 10mm Rock Island Armory TAC Ultra, but I'm curious. Maybe I should stay and find out.

Cylinder & Slide’s Trident II 1911 (gun Review)

- Saturday, July 18, 2015

Cylinder & Slide Trident 2-1

Trident is a Trident, which in mythology, is associated with both Neptune and Poseidon. It is also the center of the emblem of the US Navy Special Warfare, where he was arrested by a golden eagle with an anchor and rock is loaded pistol. Badges represent the values and mission of the Navy SEAL community core. He is also the namesake of a custom 1911 Cylinder & Slide (C & S).

Cylinder & Slide Trident 2-3

History C & S 1911 Trident II began in 2009, when Bill Laughridge, founder and president of the company, it teaches custom classes Pistolsmithing 1911 in Virginia. One of his students are active duty SEAL who has an affinity for 1911. At this school, students share experiences with fine sand, known as "moon dust" which poison the equipment Iraq, Afghanistan and other anonymous places. This discussion has been the catalyst that sends Laughridge on a quest to find a suitable finish for 1911 which will not attract sand, dust and other impurities. Discussions also leads to a set of specifications for 1911 will be reliable in harsh environments with minimal maintenance. In honor of the Naval Special Warfare warriors, Laughridge appointed Trident gun.

It is important to note that Trident did not destroy the earth and do not have a revolutionary new features. What makes the difference is the script Trident. But, citing Laughridge, "The devil is in the details." Any modifications and components have been carefully assessed to ensure maximum durability and reliability in the harshest environments in the world. It is this philosophy, supported by real-world experience, which defines the Trident apart from many other 1911s.

Cylinder & Slide Trident 2-10

The original Trident Springfield 1911A1 warehouse used as the basic platform. Trident Springfield provides proof of concept, and C & S has built and sold a large number of pistols. As the project has grown Trident, basic pistol Springfield delivery problem. Laughridge took the decision to move to a completely custom gun built using C & S OEM slide and frame.

A1 version of the Trident II is a 5-inch models with integral Picatinny rail governments wells magazines and accessories. A2 variant configuration of the standard 5-inch model of government without an accessory rail. Finally, Trident II is a weapon Commander A3 size and does not have the same mag rail or accessory.

SEAL STEEL

Cylinder & Slide Trident 2-5

After testing the original Trident for a gun battle in 2010, I was very pleased to see the new and improved version. Trident basic features of the original have been preserved, and it is important to note that all the major components of the Trident II C & S OEM parts. Critical internal parts CNC machined aluminum or made of forged and heat treated everywhere. Each party is subject to strict control and subject to violence assessment using Rockwell test machine. Surprisingly, Trident II does not contain MIM parts.

To understand the concept of Trident, need to examine the main changes and component selection. Part of my test pistol, A1 variant has an integral accessory rail that has been corrected to the dimensions of standard MIL-spec. Frontstrap is to increase the gripping surface dotted machine. Selected stippling of the grid for several reasons. Dotted provide good positive gripping surface without flaws grid, which can trap dirt, skin or blood and are difficult to clean. Grid also tend to undermine the speed and can be dented and damaged. Another small detail and often overlooked involves shares socket when not installed, tends to come back when removing stock. C & S partner correct and challenge bushing to prevent this problem. Barrel spring steel enclosure has a cable loop hidden and dashed and completely mixed into the frame and a good magazine.

Cylinder & Slide Trident 2-4

Slide has a front and rear cocking serrations for easy cycling and press check. The 5-inch barrel C & S is a drop-in adjustable with finger tight barrel sleeve is opened to increase reliability. This combination gives the Trident II, on average, an accuracy of 2 inches to 25 yards. The ejection port is lowered, and the leading edge increased to allow for the expulsion of unfired rounds safe. C & S uses an extractor machine checked for proper heat treatment, and then converted and rounded and tense. The firing pin diameter hole was opened in the original specification .45.

External controls including safety C & S beavertail grip with palm swell that is mounted and specially modified. Hammers break cut and expanded to prevent the accumulation of dirt in the recess and block the gun. Ambidextrous thumb safety is a broader concept that C & S has reduced the width of the palette. Status indicators decreased and white color coded to indicate when the safety engaged and red if the safety is in the "off". I wonder why the first point of the fire control conditions are color-coded, but the former Special Forces operator and gunsmith Larry Vickers is one of the first to use red dots / white in the red for 1911. "fire" and white "safe "internationally accepted indicator of a lot of weapons. This is a nice personal touch to the gun. The slide stop Greider is a design that provides a solid advantage to both drop when charging and manual slide lock the slide back.

Cylinder & Slide Trident 2-9

C & S which have been solid, the average length of the trigger with a solid shoes and stainless steel arch. It also comes with an internal overtravel stop. The average length of the trigger allows plenty of room to carry Trident II with gloves in cold weather. Triggers less dense three holes in a fashion that can attract debris and contributed to the damage. The trigger of the gun broke my test net 4.75 pounds without overshoot.

Trident II has a rear view heinie Ledge with flange tilt at the front edge of the blade. Home "Strong" for C & S has been specifically developed for the Trident project. High handlebars side expanded at the base, eliminating the weak point of 90 degrees was found in traditional designs. This provides a more robust design for harsh operating environments. A Trijicon tritium insert surrounded by a white circle for the acquisition of more positive in various conditions.

Cylinder & Slide Trident 2-7

Frames, slides and all major components of the Trident II is covered with a layer of nickel-boron. This allows the gun to function in harsh environments, with little or no lubrication. Dust and dirt are the enemies of all firearms, and the 1911s was known not run properly without proper lubrication on the tracks, the barrel lid and spout. Nickel-boron PVD finish provides lubrication and anti-corrosion properties are remarkable. In addition, carbon deposits and fouling does not stick finish, which makes cleaning easier.

After the Trident II construction is complete, but before being sent to complete the test-firing pistol is 15 yards to examine both the function and reliability. It is at this stage that the view of the front blade is cut to zero completely with 230 grain FMJ ammunition. Stang is then removed and sent to a white circle and Trijicon tritium insert. The other components are then ready to be coated with nickel boron. Once all the pieces are returned, the gun and then reassembled and reinstalled sites. The gun was test-fired a second time to end the control function and the zero confirmed. Test firing is done by July 3 rounds, nickel boron coated magazine delivered with a gun. During the process, a minimum of 56 turns is pulled through each gun. Although this process is both expensive and time consuming, ensures the reliability of each Trident II.

Ready Range

Cylinder & Slide Trident 2-8

I was very fortunate to receive the first production of Trident II to this assessment. The bill was also keen to get feedback early because it was the first pistol built on a new frame and slide. During testing, I saw two small problems. The first is that the rear edge under the thumb of security necessary to remove the sharp edges rounded off. The second item involves fire control and pull the trigger. Nickel-boron completed resulting in a very smooth trigger that feels lighter than measured 4.25 pounds. Two of them are very minor issues but Laughridge feel they are important enough for everyone to be sent to the gun production.

No one's surprise, the Trident II proved reliable at 100 percent with a variety of ammunition. I even gun defatted and ran in a completely dry state in an effort to encourage the damage. I tested the Trident II with three charges at a distance of 25 yards. Barnes 185 grain + P TSX ASYM precision munitions produce 973 frames per second speed and a better group of 1.75 inches. Weapons PNW 185 Tac Ops ball while copper grains is similar to the design Barnes TSX. He produced a speed of 977 frames per second and groups better than 1.95 inches. Finally, I tested 230 grain loads Bonded personal defense of Winchester, which is an average of 924 fps and produce a better group of 2.10 inches.

Soldiers year

Cylinder & Slide Trident 2-2

The fact that the customs in 1911 is still the first choice of many soldiers at this time is a tribute to John Moses Browning and his unwavering creation. Actually, Trident II is no different from the original design of Browning. However, modern production technology, quality parts and certain changes that allow the design of a 100-year continues to be relevant. Although the 1911s are more expensive on the market, I am not sure that there is more reliable. Trident II is designed specifically to fit into danger. Whether in the deserts of Iraq, the mountains of Afghanistan or the Main Street, USA, Trident II is ready for any mission.

Metro Arms Mac 1911 model .45 ACP Pistol (Gun Review)

- Wednesday, July 15, 2015

1911 Model was never designed to be a target Pistol. Does not mean you can not, it just not designed that way.

Mac 1911-1

Developed jointly by John M. Browning and Colt firearms patent Manufacturing Company, the first semi-automatic .45 ACP Pistol introduced by Colt in 1905. "smokeless .45 caliber Rimless" Automatic Colt Model 1905, although somewhat different from 1911 , clearly established the platform will be the most famous, semi-automatic Pistol made in America in history.

Back in 1907, the Ordnance Department has evaluated the improved version in 1905 for the US Army, but the Gun failed to meet the government's expectations, sending Colt and Browning returned to the drawing board for the design process in 1909 (and again in 1910). This version is a significant improvement, such as changes to the system locking Gun multiple links to a single switch design that is still used today, and dramatic changes to the shape and angle of the handle, John Browning said that would improve the handling characteristics of the weapon. After another field test of the government in February 1910 Browning and Colt has made additional changes, how the weapon was basically regarded as the M1911 except for the thumb safety. A little more than one year later, March 3, 1911, the final version of the Browning semi-automatic has been assessed by the Department of Ordnance. The new .45 ACP works perfectly, firing 6,000 rounds of ammunition without failure and address all the concerns Ordnance Department, including the addition of an external thumb safety so that the Gun can be done with round booths and armed hammer! On March 29, 1911, US Secretary of War Jacob M. Dickinson approve the selection of Colt as "US Pistol, automatic, Caliber .45, Model 1911." As they say, the rest is history.

Mac 1911-2

As a military Pistol, M1911 is exactly what the US needs. But for the civilian market, it left much to be desired. After M1911 has been updated to version M1911Al 1924 (distinguished by a short relaxation, a more secure grip and spring housing curved), Colt developed a Model of the first target, the National Pistol Match, was introduced in 1933. Designed specifically for target shooting, it is equipped with a "super -halus, polished by hand because the action Target 'Match' bidirectional barrel and adjustable rear sight. " original Pistol national game produced until start of the Second World War and had returned in 1957 as the Gold Cup National Match.

Fast forward half a century and Colt 1911 Models are now the most copied semi-automatic in the world. The M1911 has a version adapted for use defensive, targets and shooting competitions available than other Pistol in history, bringing us to a new, 6-inch Gun MAC 1911 Target Bullseye metro Gun arm.

Maxed

Mac 1911-3

I remember buying my first slide length 1911 1988 (which was easy because I still have), and the first thing I did was to have a Gun with a trigger and target range and handles the safety of the mother. I also had the barrel and throat and add customized target sites. At the time, it is a substantial investment and strong in 1911 that are not manufactured by Colt. I ended 1911 with custom length slideshow reliable, accurate and no appeal was lost during the last 25 years. Imagine my surprise when I received the news of the arm metro MAC 1911 Bullseye and found almost the same Gun, right out of the box, as I have custom built a quarter century.

Made in the Philippines by Metro Arms, the new MAC 1911 Bullseye is a refined version, a long-barreled popular Model 1911 Target MAC 1911 classical company, a set of smooth semi-automatic with a wealth of features. While Bullseye shorter than the traditional long slide (which has a 7-inch Gun), MAC 1911 add one inch to 5-inch barrel and a sliding Model of government to create the perfect Pistol targets.

Mac 1911-4

The difference between a Pistol and rifle targets down specific improvements in the operating characteristics, ease of use, speed of reloading, the construction of the barrel and, of course, accuracy. Every feature adds to the price. A custom built Model of governance that would normally set you back anywhere from $ 2,300 to fight Kimber Gold II for $ 2,800 Combat The ultimate Baer Guru, and up to $ 5,000 for a Model of artificial competition from Wilson Combat. Less than $ 2,000, not much Pistol target (outside publishing Trophy Match Springfield Armory), so that when the MAC 1911 Bullseye 6 inches fully optioned come at a suggested retail price of $ 1.204, you should know.

For a little more than the price of the base rate until 1911, metro standard arm gives your Bullseye extra long path, match quality bull barrel; 4140 hammer forged steel blade; Bomar style patterns completely customized; handlebars fitted to the center of the bubble; lit and lowered ejection port; an extended beavertail grip safety; targeting framework trigger and hammer combat; front and rear slide serrations broad; a subtle plaid spring frontstrap and flats; an ambidextrous thumb safety; an extended magazine well; and the eight-round magazine. For the most part, this is a list of features considered necessary upgrades to the target .45 ACP Pistol competition, so you have to ask the obvious question. How well the Metro Weapon build its 1911s? Do they have the quality fit and finish you expect from a quality target Pistol match? And most importantly, how do they learn? Although the standard features of the MAC 1911 Bullseye involve high expectations that the price does not work, it all shakes out a range of tests.

Bullseyes striking

Mac 1911-6

MAC 1911 Bullseye has a combination of matte / polished jumbo frame and slide, with polished shiny flat surface. The top of the slide is tilted and smooth matte finishes in a blue / black, which is the bottom of the chassis, the apartments at the slide serrations, front and backstrap, sloping good magazine, security thumb, press the beaver slide and safety. Custom wood handles have a deep texture, fish scale design with border line and arms metro logo in the middle. Visually, it is a firearm generous finish.

Trigger test my weapons an average light 4.8 pounds. The trigger is injection molded metal frame and has established networks in the face. Trigger adjustable travel just 0.125 inch to 0.062 inch drop the hammer and ignored overrun. Release slide is lightweight and easily activated (even when not chambering rounds). Click ambidextrous thumb safety up and down with authority, and chicken hammer with modest effort. Slide requires a strong, but not excessive, pull to release the Gun or chambering the first round. It is, however, very fast, solid traction in the back, making it feel a little different from the traditional Model of government backward slide since spring extended. In addition, an extra inch barrel length zipper and increase the radius of view and make the Gun just a little nose heavy, which is an advantage for target Pistol.

Mac 1911-5

Because of the quality of fit of the barrel of a bullseye bull is some error loading ammunition road, my test cartridge comprises 230 WFSJ defensive towers plus three popular item. The top scale is 230 defensive Hydra-Shok federal premium grain jacketed hollow point (JHPs), followed by 185 grain Hornady FTX critical defense and Speer Gold Dot HP tower. The Bullseye manage but each may have an electrical problem with the cost of defense (Metro Arms had a change of spring back to fix this problem). This, however, is not a problem with Hydra-Shoks, but there are some blockages with lightweight 185-grainers.

The hardball .45 ACP passed my chronograph trap to 850 fps, Federal Hydra-Shok Heavyweight slightly faster at 873 fps, while Hornady and Speer once stolen 1030 fps. All tests were performed using a two-handed grip position stood at 25 yards (75 feet), suspension shoot IPSC targets of the target carrier-Pro various law enforcement targets.

The best group of five rounds with 230 grain ammunition hardball measured even 2 inches clustered around the "A" of the IPSC targets. Defense ammunition, 230 federal grain JHPs work better in the MAC 1911 in 1911 but had the widest group size of 1.95 inches. Tower Speer 185 grain products a tight group, measuring 0.85 inches, with five rounds of 185 grain Hornady FTX reunification of 1.75 inches, but there are occasional problems with strength in both the MAC 1911. For target shooting, 230 grains of some error is the best ( and most affordable) option.

Mac 1911-7

In addition to the occasional failure to feed with 185-rounds of ammunition defensive, MAC 1911 works perfectly, fast to reload, and the adjustable rear view style Bomar and trigger a sharp, proved more than enough in a tight group of print jobs, off-hand shooting at 25 yard with open sites.

Built in strong

Mac 1911-2

MAC 1911 as a firearm Bullseye check the quality of construction, but not everything is perfect in design. Has a 6-inch barrel, recoil spring and guide rod lengthwise into two sections present an interesting challenge when etching field Gun, and disassembly and reassembly (we just do not reverse order) must be properly addressed. It is in the process of stripping the more traditional field in 1911, but again, this is not the traditional 1911. As a special Gun targets, the MAC 1911 performs well, and, with practice and ammunition hand, can easily afford the printing unit is less than 1 inch at 25 yards.

Overall, for the entry of competition Pistol, MAC 1911 Bullseye appears to be a reasonable price. It is also available with a hard chrome finish to the handlebars with plush red colored optical fiber.
